It looks theatrical, but every movement is a highly efficient response to life in the blue water.

    Flying fish are gliders, not birds

    Flying fish belong to the family Exocoetidae, a group of marine fish adapted to escape predators by gliding above the sea. They do not flap their fins as a bird would flap its wings. Instead, they use speed, a carefully angled body and oversized pectoral fins to turn a burst of swimming power into an aerial glide.

    Their open-ocean habitat makes this strategy particularly useful. In pelagic waters, there are few places to hide. A pursuing tuna, dorado or other fast predator can cover distance quickly beneath the surface, while a flying fish that clears the water changes the contest entirely. It gains precious seconds and often travels beyond the immediate reach of its pursuer.

Near the surface, it may continue beating this tail while the rest of the body is partly out of the water. This creates a fast final push before launch.

    Once airborne, the large pectoral fins spread wide. In some species, the pelvic fins also extend, creating an even broader lifting surface. The fish is not generating power in the air; it is gliding on the speed already created below the surface, using the fins as hydrofoil-like wings adapted for air.

    Body shape matters as much as the fins. Flying fish are streamlined, lightweight and designed to reduce drag. They leave the water at a shallow angle rather than shooting straight upwards, which helps them convert forward speed into distance. A glide may cover tens of metres, and favourable wind conditions can make the movement appear even more effortless.

    A fish can also touch down briefly and launch again. These repeated stages are sometimes called taxiing: the tail contacts the surface, beats rapidly and restores speed without the fish fully settling back into the sea. For anyone watching from the flybridge or open deck, the result can seem almost impossible - a silver body tracing a low, elegant path above the Atlantic.

    There is a trade-off, of course. Leaving the water may evade one predator but makes the fish visible to others, including seabirds. Gliding is an escape strategy, not a guarantee of safety. Its value lies in surprise, distance and the ability to make a fast pursuer lose its line.

    Why they often appear near a boat’s wake

    A yacht does not need to chase wildlife for flying fish to be visible. As a vessel moves through the sea, the bow wave and changing water pressure can startle fish resting or feeding near the surface. Their instinct is to accelerate away, which is exactly when their specialised anatomy becomes visible.

    Responsible boat handling remains essential. The aim is never to force an encounter or turn a natural moment into a pursuit.
