Whales and Dolphins Watching Tour in Tenerife

The main feature of a whale watching tour in Tenerife is the opportunity to see whales and dolphins up close in their natural habitat. Did you know that Tenerife is the third highest volcanic island in the world? The Teide volcano rises from the bottom of the sea to a height of almost 7 km, and the difference in depth between Tenerife and the neighboring island of La Gomera is up to 3 km. This unique underwater geography creates the perfect conditions for whale watching in Tenerife, making it one of Europe's premier whale watching destinations. With this, the strait between Tenerife and La Gomera is a very rich ecosystem that attracts these marine animals here.

In the waters of Tenerife you can find up to 17 different species of whales and dolphins. Some species of whales and dolphins live permanently in the waters of the south of Tenerife: pilot whales, bottlenose dolphins (known from the movie Flipper), striped dolphins. During the migration through the waters of Tenerife from March to May, so called Tenerife whale watching season, you can see fin whales, blue whales and sperm whales, toothed, striped and spotted dolphins. Pilot whales can be often seen no more than 2 miles from the South coast.

There are strict rules in Tenerife for the yachts approaching whales. It is allowed to come to the whales no closer than 50 meters. However, the whales themselves often approach the yacht, which in this case must remain not moving. Loud music, bathing and feeding animals are prohibited. Whales and dolphins watching in the vicinity is only possible for Tenerife blue flag boats that are licensed for whales and dolphins watching excursions in Tenerife. Therefore, when booking a whale and dolphin watching tour, it is necessary to find out if the yacht has a “blue” flag. Royal Ocean yacht is one of the legal boats having permission for whales and dolphins excursions.

The yachts making whales and dolphin trips in Tenerife are located in three marinas in Tenerife. Marina del Sur in Las Galletas and Puerto Colon offer whale and dolphin watching at Costa Adeje and Los Cristianos area. Marina de Los Gigantes has the boats making dolphin trips in the area from San Juan to Los Gigantes. Many Tenerife yachts offer group whale and dolphin tours at individual prices, but it is possible to book a private charter.

    FAQ

In Tenerife waters, you can observe up to 17 different species of cetaceans. The most common are short-finned pilot whales and bottlenose dolphins, which are resident species. Depending on the season, you might also encounter sperm whales, fin whales, sei whales, and during migration periods (March-May), even blue whales. Other species include striped dolphins, spotted dolphins, and false killer whales.
Whale watching in Tenerife is excellent year-round thanks to our resident population of pilot whales and dolphins. However, November to February is considered the peak migration season when you have better chances of seeing a greater variety of species. Spring months (March-May) are particularly good for spotting migrating sperm whales, fin whales, and occasionally blue whales.
Our success rate is an impressive 99%. The unique marine environment between Tenerife and La Gomera creates perfect conditions for cetaceans, making sightings almost guaranteed. However, as we deal with wild animals in their natural habitat, we cannot provide a 100% guarantee.
The Barco Azul flag is an official certification granted by the Canary Islands government to vessels that comply with strict regulations for responsible and sustainable whale watching. These include maintaining minimum distances from the animals (50 meters), approaching slowly and carefully, limiting observation time, preventing noise pollution, and employing knowledgeable guides. By choosing a boat with the Barco Azul flag, you're supporting ethical tourism and marine conservation.
All times of day offer good opportunities for whale watching in Tenerife. Morning tours often benefit from calmer sea conditions, while afternoon excursions can provide beautiful lighting for photography. Our 3-hour tour is timed to maximize your chances of memorable encounters regardless of when you sail.
We recommend bringing sunglasses, a hat, sunscreen, a light jacket (it can be windy on the water), a camera, and any personal medication you might need. Don't forget your swimwear and a towel if you plan to enjoy the swimming stop. We provide refreshments onboard, so there's no need to bring food or drinks.
Yes, our whale watching tour is family-friendly and suitable for children of all ages. The limited number of passengers (maximum 10) ensures a comfortable experience for families. Children are often the most excited observers when we encounter whales and dolphins!
According to regulations, boats must maintain a minimum distance of 50 meters from cetaceans. However, these curious animals often approach vessels on their own. In such cases, we follow protocol by stopping the engines and allowing the animals to investigate us naturally. This can result in some amazing close encounters while still respecting the animals' space and behavior.
